Friction - Friend and Foe!

In your home, find FIVE places in which friction is useful.

Now find FIVE places in which it is useful NOT to have friction.

    Carpets:stop us from sliding around.
    Chopping board:stop fruit and other items from sliding around when we cut them.
    Plastic Cup:stops us from dropping them.
    Rubber:uses friction to rub off pencil.
    Towel:Produces heat which we use to dry ourselves.
    Not Useful:
    Doors:friction can stop them from running smoothly.
    Roof:friction can stop rain from flowing off the roof.
    Bath Tiles:friction can make water collect on bath tiles and rot sealant.
    Sash windows:friction can wear away at sash cords and break the window.
    Lock:friction can wear away at a lock and render it useless.

    braking
    produce heat
    writting
    lighting a match
    Basketball players use it to make quick turns on the court
    rubber
    towel
    fire
    sliding down a rope
    makes methods of transport slower
    rubs off skin if you fall over
    It stops objects from sliding endlessly
    brushing your teeth
    skiing
    hammer hitting a nail


    not to useful:
    carpet burns
    slide burns
    on pulling objects, you spend more energy because of friction.
    electric drills cannot be used continuously because they heat up due to friction.
